Self-help Group (SGH) is founded in Somaliland in September 2013 by NAFIS Network. It is an informal association of poor communities whose shared goal is to work together for their economic empowerment and social development. The primary purpose of the SHG is to obtain economic benefits and social responsibility. This approach empowers women and girls who are poor and unskilled by providing facilities such as knowledge, skills, motivation, and sustainability.
The approach concentrates on three strong pillars: social, economic, and political empowerment.
All three are necessary to allow the poor to assert and realize their rights as human beings, citizens, and equal participants in civil society.
The SHG Federation is a network consisting of the several Cluster Level Associations from SHG members, who are the representatives from the different geographical settings; they motivate and support SHG Federation Members to reach their goals in Economic, Social, and Political empowerment of women and girls members, and they also responsible to build their capacity and link into the other public and private sectors.
Nafis Network Participated in the open ceremony office of Kaaba Federation in Hargeisa, which was attended by all sectors of society, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and the government, especially, the Ministry of Interior and Security, Minister of Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs, and family, The commission of IDPs and refugees, private company, Dahabshil bank, Premier Bank and other microfinance institutions, Political parties, SHG Coordination office.
The ceremony was organized by the Kaaba Federation leaders and its member’s Cluster Level Associations, the Kaaba Federation is one of the Danwadaag Federation which Nafis Network established in Somaliland. The Kaaba Federation consists of the 37 Cluster level Association, where each CLA consist of 8 to 10 SHGs, each SHG has 20 persons in the member. SHG Federation is the highest level of the Danwadaag System.
The main role of the Federation is to
Strengthen and monitor CLA and people’s institutions for sustainability.
To work for the Economic justice for member CLAs and SHGs
To provide quality services to the local communities, where the SHGs members work.
To change society’s negative thinking and review the laws and policies in the country that affects the marginalized groups, especially women, girls, and children.
Building SHGs microfinance linkage to the private local Banks. ” One of the guests from the Dahabshil Bank highlighted that Dahabshiil’s microfinance system was launched in 2014. 80% of the people we invest in are women, women who collaborated the Danwadag system are most people that we invest, first period, we invest 500 SHGs, and we instructed them how the banking system works, as well as how to open a saving account for personal uses, we Provided $250 for each person. Similarly, the Premier bank has close working with women who are members of Danwadaag. We work with the two folded systems. The bank provides loans to the women, and Qardu-Hassan (Charity). its fourth term that the bank has provided the loans. The Danwadaag program ( SHG) addresses a wide range of social issues, women are the breadwinners of poor families, and they are social workers. SHG is the only tool to eradicate poverty and empower the marginalized communities, and SHGs members voluntarily took the role of the Ministry of employment, social affairs, and Family. Therefore, the ministry will subsidize the Kaaba Federation, and Ministry will pay the office rent of the federation.
