how media can contribute to the advocacy campaign against all forms of FGM/C and effective reporting on the issues of FGM/C in Somaliland. As media is the main awareness channel to the public; the government institutions, Communities, religious leaders, traditional leaders and other key stakeholders. The training modules were included the historical background of FGM/C, human rights conventions against FGM/C, the consequences of FGM/C, the different types of FGM/C and the role of media in FGM/C eradication.
During the training, NAFIS shared with the participants the prevalence of FGM/C in Somaliland which currently is 99.8%, one of the reasons that the prevalence is still high is due to the lack of understanding of FGM/C by media professional in which they describe when reporting FGM/C as Paranoiac (which is one of the four different types of FGM/C), this caused the absence of media role in the fight against FGM/C.
At the end of the training, the representatives from the Media houses assured that, they will voluntary participate in the campaign against FGM/C, as this will help enabling a safe environment for Somaliland girls. The executive director of NAFIS Network Mr. Abdrahman Gaas called the media to be the leading body of the fight against FGM/C which is the only way that the NETWORK can achieve its vision of FGM/C total eradication in Somaliland.
