Female  genital  mutilation  (FGM/C)  is all  procedures  that  involve  partial  or  total  removal  of  the  external  female  genitalia,  or  other  injury  to  the  female  genital  organs  for nontherapeutic/ medical  reasons.  It  is  an ancient  tradition  in  large  parts  of Afric a  and  is  now practised  in  30  countries  in  western,  eastern,  and  north-eastern  Africa,  parts  of  the  Middle  East[and  Asia,  and  within  some immigrant   communities   in   Europe,   North  America   and  Australia. This   study   looked at   the prevalence, perception and attit ude towards abandonment of FGM/C in Somaliland. DOWNLOAD

As 2016 closes, there have been a lot of Anti-FGM/C interventions at NAFIS network which contributed immensely to abandon and outlaw this practice in Somaliland. FGM/C irreparably damages girls’ bodies, inflicting excruciating pain. It causes extreme emotional trauma that can last a lifetime. It increases the risk of deadly complications during pregnancy, labor and childbirth, endangering both mother and child. It robs girls of their autonomy and violates their human rights. It reflects the low status of girls and women and reinforces gender inequality, fueling intergenerational cycles of discrimination and harm. DOWNLOAD

In Somaliland type three is called 'pharaoic' (in Somali "Fircooni" or "qodob" meansing infibulation), whereas all other types are referred to as "Sunna". The reasons for the pratice of FGM/C lie in the blief that it maintains virginity, controls femal sexuality and is a purifiying action. FGM/C is known as "Xalaaleyn" in English "legalzig", meaning that the girl is now fir for marriage and other socian functions. DOWNLOAD

Every  year,  three  million  girls  are  subjected  to  genital  mutilation/cutting,  in  the  worldwide  a  dangerous   and   potentially   life-threatening   procedure   that   causes   unspeakable   pain   and suffering. This practice violates girls’ and women’s basic human rights, denying them of their physical and mental integrity, their right to freedom from violence and discrimination, and in the most extreme case, of their life. DOWNLOAD

he study was conducted in Awdal, Maroodijeeh  and Togdheer regions in Somaliland, the study  covered city towns, districts, villages, and rural  areas. The study target groups of the researched  locations were circumcisers. The methodology  of  data  collection  was  exploratory  approach  by exploring new insights from a new angle of  which previous studies under looked. DOWNLOAD

It is time that adults who believe in protecting the rights of small girls take  action to prevent the cutting and maiming of the healthy genitals of small  girls in the name of culture, religion or other pretext. Saving voiceless female  children from the injuries and ills of FGM/C is a huge moral responsibility  that we collectively and individually need to take. As many of us are aware of,  Female Genital Mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is widely practiced in many countries  in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Here in Somaliland, the prevalence rate of  FGM/C is very high. According to a nationwide research conducted by NAFIS  Network in 2014, ninety nine point eight percent (99.8%) of Somaliland girls  between the ages of 7-9 undergone some form of FGM/C, most often the most  severe form of infibulations. This harmful practice continues to cause immense  lifelong physical and psychological problems for the affected  women and girls. DOWNLOAD
